Colours show the crescent visibility from Makkah on each evening (Odeh criterion).
How is crescent visibility predicted?
After the new moon (conjunction) the moon is too close to the sun to be seen. On the following evenings it moves away and a thin crescent appears just after sunset. Its visibility depends on how high the moon is when the sky gets dark (arc of vision) and how wide the crescent is.
We use the criterion published by Mohammad Odeh (2006), based on 737 observations: zone A – easily visible with the naked eye; B – visible with optical aid and possibly the naked eye; C – optical aid only; D – not visible. Calculations run in your browser for every point on the map.
Frequently asked questions
What is the moon phase today?
The moon is Full moon today, 98% illuminated.
When is the next new moon?
The next new moon (conjunction) is on November 9, 2026 07:02 UTC. The crescent of Jumada al-Akhirah 1448 can usually be seen one or two evenings later.
Why is the crescent visible in some countries and not others?
The crescent is higher and older at sunset the further west you are, so it is often seen first in the Americas or Africa and only the next evening in Asia.
