Laylat al-Qadr, the Night of Decree, is the night in which the Quran began to be revealed. Allah describes it as “better than a thousand months” (Quran 97:3). It is hidden in the last ten nights of Ramadan, most likely in an odd night.
Expected dates in 2027
If Ramadan 1448 begins on Monday, 8 February 2027, the last ten nights start at sunset on Saturday, 27 February. Islamic nights begin at Maghrib, so each night comes before the day with the same number:
- 21st night: evening of Saturday, 27 February
- 23rd night: evening of Monday, 1 March
- 25th night: evening of Wednesday, 3 March
- 27th night: evening of Friday, 5 March
- 29th night: evening of Sunday, 7 March
If your country begins Ramadan one day later, move every date by one day.
The dua of Laylat al-Qadr
Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) asked the Prophet ﷺ what she should say if she found Laylat al-Qadr. He taught her:
Allahumma innaka ‘afuwwun tuhibbul ‘afwa fa‘fu ‘anni
“O Allah, You are the One who pardons, You love to pardon, so pardon me.”
A simple plan for each night
- Before Maghrib: rest a little in the afternoon so you have energy at night.
- After Iftar: eat lightly, pray Isha and Taraweeh.
- Late night: pray two or more rak'ahs of Qiyam, read the Quran slowly with its meaning.
- Before Suhoor: make long dua for yourself, your family and the whole Ummah; repeat the dua above.
- Every night: give a little charity, even a small amount, so you are sure to have given on Laylat al-Qadr.
I'tikaf
The Prophet ﷺ spent the last ten days in i'tikaf, staying in the mosque for worship. If you cannot do the full ten days, ask your mosque whether shorter i'tikaf is possible, or set aside a quiet corner and a few hours at home.
