Is it okay to sleep most of the day while fasting?
Question · One of the most asked questions about Ramadan
In Ramadan I usually stay up late, pray Fajr and then sleep until the afternoon because the day goes faster. Does sleeping most of the day make my fast invalid or weaker?
Short answer
Yes, your fast is valid even if you sleep most of the day, as long as you intended to fast. But you must not sleep through the obligatory prayers, and you miss much of Ramadan's reward.
Detailed answer
Sleeping during the day does not break the fast. If you made the intention to fast and then slept for long hours, your fast is still valid. The real concern is not the fast itself but what you might lose: the prayers on time and the precious hours of Ramadan.
What the Quran and Sunnah say
The fast is broken by things like eating, drinking and intimate relations, not by sleep, and scholars agree that a person who sleeps for part of the day keeps a valid fast. But prayer has its own fixed times: "Prayer has been prescribed for the believers at set times" (An-Nisa 4:103). Sleeping through Dhuhr and Asr without waking up to pray is a serious matter and a sin of its own, even though the fast stays valid. See also whether a fast is valid without prayer.
You may have heard that "the sleep of a fasting person is worship". This saying is not authentically established as a word of the Prophet, peace be upon him, so it should not be used as a reason to sleep the day away. Rest taken with a good intention, to have energy for worship at night, can still be rewarded.
In practice
- Set alarms for Dhuhr and Asr and pray them on time. Check your local prayer times.
- A short nap after Dhuhr is perfectly fine and can help you stay fresh for Taraweeh.
- Fill some daytime hours with Quran, dhikr, helping at home or your normal work.
Why it matters
Ramadan lasts only a few weeks. Fasting is meant to train patience and awareness of Allah, and part of that training is feeling some hunger while staying active, kind and productive. Sleeping all day avoids the test rather than passing it.
Tips
Go to bed earlier after Taraweeh, eat a balanced suhoor and drink enough water at night. Our guide on sleeping well in Ramadan has more ideas. If you feel extremely tired every day, it may be worth checking your health with a doctor.
