Why do Muslims break their fast with dates?
Question · One of the most asked questions about Ramadan
Why do Muslims always start iftar with dates? Is it a religious rule, or just a tradition from the Middle East? I don't really like them.
Short answer
Muslims break their fast with dates because the Prophet did so, making it a sunnah. It is recommended, not required: water or any halal food also breaks the fast.
Detailed answer
Muslims break their fast with dates mainly to follow the example of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). It is a sunnah, a recommended practice, not an obligation. If you do not have dates or do not like them, water or any halal food breaks your fast just as well, and your fast is complete.
What the Sunnah says
Anas ibn Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Prophet (peace be upon him) used to break his fast with a few fresh dates before praying; if there were none, then with dried dates; and if there were none, he would take a few sips of water (Abu Dawud and Tirmidhi). In another hadith he advised breaking the fast with dates, or with water if dates are not available, because water is purifying (Abu Dawud and Tirmidhi).
Why dates make sense
- Quick, gentle energy: dates contain natural sugars that the body uses quickly after a long fast.
- Fibre and minerals: they are rich in fibre and potassium.
- Easy on the stomach: a few dates and water prepare the body for a meal and help avoid overeating.
- A shared tradition: from Morocco to Indonesia, the same simple act connects Muslims around the world.
In practice
- Break your fast at sunset with one or a few dates and a glass of water.
- Say the dua for breaking the fast; see what to say when breaking your fast.
- Many people then pray Maghrib before the main meal. See iftar before or after Maghrib.
What if I do not like dates?
That is fine. The Prophet himself broke his fast with water when dates were not there. You can start with water and then eat what you like. You are still following the spirit of the sunnah by breaking the fast promptly and simply.
If you have diabetes, dates are high in sugar: follow your doctor's advice about how many to eat. For ideas for the rest of the meal, see a healthy iftar.
